A through-hardened screw with a cutting point and a ribbed countersunk head, for interior timber-to-timber work where you want one fixing to do the job of a bolt and a bracket. It drives without a pilot in softwood and pulls its own head flush.

The shank is partially threaded — the smooth section under the head is what lets the two members pull together instead of jacking apart, which is the whole point of a structural screw and the thing a fully-threaded screw cannot do.

Sold by the box with the count printed on the label and the batch stamped beside it. If you need to match a fixing in twelve months, the box tells you which one you bought.

Working load limits

What this item holds, in the material you are fixing into. Every figure is a working load — the safety factor is already taken out.

Safety factor5:1 — every figure below is the tested mean divided by five.

Working load limits for Bracken Structural Screw 6 × 80 by substrate
Substrate / conditionWorking loadNotes
Softwood, 50 mm penetration into the receiving member205 lbWithdrawal, screw loaded along its axis. Pilot not required.
Hardwood, 50 mm penetration, 4 mm pilot310 lbWithdrawal. Without the pilot the screw will snap before it seats.
Softwood, single shear across the joint line240 lbShear, both members at least 45 mm thick.

How these were arrived at

Measured on a bench rig, twenty samples per substrate, at 12% moisture content and 68°F. Figures are per screw and assume at least 60 mm from an end and 25 mm from an edge; closer than that the timber splits before the fixing reaches its rating.

The specification

Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.

Composition
Case-hardened carbon steel, cold-formed, through-hardened and tempered. Partially threaded: 45 mm thread, 35 mm plain shank.
Dimensions
6.0 mm nominal diameter × 80 mm overall. 13 mm ribbed countersunk head, TX30 recess.
Weight
14 g each; 780 g per box of 50.
Finish & variation
Black phosphate over the hardened steel. Interior finish — it holds lubricant, takes paint without a primer, and will bloom orange within a season if it gets weather.
Made
Cold-formed, hardened and finished at a fastener works in the Ruhr, Germany. Boxed and counted here in Pennsylvania.

Care

  • Keep the box closed and dry — the label carries the count and the batch.
  • Drive with a bit that actually fits; a worn bit rounds the recess and the screw is then unremovable.
  • Pilot in hardwood and near an end grain edge, always.

Cautions

  • Not for exterior or damp use. Phosphate is a sacrificial coating, not a barrier — outdoors it blooms orange within a season and keeps corroding. Use hot-dip or A4 outside.
  • Not for contact with green or treated timber. The copper salts in modern preservative treatments attack plain steel quickly; that pairing needs stainless.
  • Not a substitute for a structural bolt in a designed connection. These are site fixings, not engineered fasteners specified by a drawing.
