The heavier Bracken, for joist hangers, stud-to-plate work and anything where 80 mm does not reach through the first member with enough left to hold in the second.
Same head geometry and the same partially-threaded shank as the 6 × 80, scaled up. The recess is TX40 — use the right bit, because a rounded recess on a 140 mm screw that is already buried is a genuinely bad afternoon.
Working load limits
What this item holds, in the material you are fixing into. Every figure is a working load — the safety factor is already taken out.
Safety factor5:1 — every figure below is the tested mean divided by five.
| Substrate / condition | Working load | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Softwood, 80 mm penetration into the receiving member | 390 lb | Withdrawal, screw loaded along its axis. |
| Hardwood, 80 mm penetration, 5.5 mm pilot | 560 lb | Withdrawal. The pilot is mandatory at this diameter. |
| Softwood, single shear across the joint line | 430 lb | Shear, both members at least 45 mm thick. |
How these were arrived at
Measured on the same rig and the same conditions as the 6 × 80 — twenty samples per substrate, 12% moisture content, 68°F. End distance 80 mm, edge distance 32 mm; the figures do not hold closer in than that.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Composition
- Case-hardened carbon steel, cold-formed, through-hardened and tempered. Partially threaded: 75 mm thread, 65 mm plain shank.
- Dimensions
- 8.0 mm nominal diameter × 140 mm overall. 16 mm ribbed countersunk head, TX40 recess.
- Weight
- 38 g each; 1.02 kg per box of 25.
- Finish & variation
- Black phosphate over the hardened steel. Interior finish — see the caution below before using it anywhere it can get wet.
- Made
- Cold-formed, hardened and finished at a fastener works in the Ruhr, Germany. Boxed and counted here in Pennsylvania.
Care
- Keep the box closed and dry — the label carries the count and the batch.
- Drive with a bit that actually fits; a worn bit rounds the recess and the screw is then unremovable.
- Pilot in hardwood and near an end grain edge, always.
Cautions
- Not for exterior or damp use. Phosphate is a sacrificial coating, not a barrier — outdoors it blooms orange within a season and keeps corroding. Use hot-dip or A4 outside.
- Not for contact with green or treated timber. The copper salts in modern preservative treatments attack plain steel quickly; that pairing needs stainless.
- Not a substitute for a structural bolt in a designed connection. These are site fixings, not engineered fasteners specified by a drawing.
