A parallel-jaw bar clamp with a 600 mm capacity, for glue-ups where the jaws need to stay square to the bar under load. The pads are cork-faced so they grip without printing into a finished face, and they float slightly to stay flat on a workpiece that is not quite parallel.
Clamping force is stated at the pad, measured with a load cell, using hand force on the handle as supplied. That number is far lower than most people assume, and knowing it is what stops you trying to close a 2 mm gap with three clamps and a hammer.
Working load limits
What this item holds, in the material you are fixing into. Every figure is a working load — the safety factor is already taken out.
Safety factor4:1 — every figure below is the tested mean divided by four.
| Substrate / condition | Working load | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-tight, ordinary firm hand force on the handle | 620 lb | Clamping force at the pad. This is the figure to design a glue-up around. |
| Two-hand force on the handle, deliberate effort | 900 lb | Clamping force. Above this the jaw begins to deflect and the faces stop being parallel. |
| Bar deflection limit across full 600 mm extension | 900 lb | Beyond this the bar bows visibly and the clamp is working against itself. |
How these were arrived at
Measured with an inline load cell between the pads, ten samples, at 68°F. Figures assume the handle as supplied and no extension bar — a pipe on the handle will exceed the casting long before it exceeds your patience.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Composition
- Cold-rolled steel bar, malleable cast-iron head and sliding jaw, acme-thread screw, cork-faced steel pads, hardwood handle.
- Dimensions
- 600 mm clamping capacity, 95 mm throat depth. Bar 28 × 8 mm. Pads 42 × 32 mm. Overall 760 mm.
- Weight
- 2.1 kg
- Finish & variation
- Zinc-plated bar and screw, painted castings. The plating will mark where the jaw slides — that wear track appears within the first few uses and does not affect anything.
- Made
- Bars rolled and castings machined in northern Italy; pads, screws and handles assembled and tested here in Pennsylvania.
Care
- Keep the screw thread clean and lightly greased; grit in the thread is what makes a clamp feel worn out.
- Store hanging or flat, not standing on the pad.
- Wipe adhesive squeeze-out off the pads before it cures rather than after.
Cautions
- Not a lifting or a pulling device. A clamp is rated to hold a joint closed in compression and nothing else; using one in tension or overhead is how a casting lets go.
- Not for closing a badly-fitted joint. Force applied to pull a gap shut is stored in the glue line and comes back out as a failed joint months later.
- Not to be extended with a bar or a pipe on the handle. The rating below assumes hand force on the handle as supplied.
