An eight-pocket roll in 18 oz waxed cotton duck, with pockets graded in width so chisels, a marking knife and a rule each sit in one that fits rather than eight identical slots that fit nothing well.
Rolled and tied it protects the edges from each other, which is the actual job — most bench chisels are dulled in a drawer, not in use. The stress points are riveted rather than bar-tacked because thread is what fails first on a roll that gets used.
Working load limits
What this item holds, in the material you are fixing into. Every figure is a working load — the safety factor is already taken out.
Safety factor4:1 — every figure below is the tested mean divided by four.
| Substrate / condition | Working load | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Loaded and carried by the tied roll | 18 lb | The canvas and rivets take considerably more; this is the point at which the leather ties begin to stretch. |
How these were arrived at
Measured by loading a tied roll and carrying it, ten samples. The ties are the limiting element by design — a tie that stretches is a two-dollar repair, where a torn panel is not.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Composition
- 18 oz paraffin-waxed cotton duck, bonded-nylon stitching, solid copper rivets at the pocket ends, vegetable-tanned leather ties.
- Dimensions
- Open 620 × 340 mm. Eight pockets: four at 40 mm, two at 55 mm, two at 70 mm. Rolls to 340 × 110 mm.
- Weight
- 640 g empty
- Finish & variation
- Waxed canvas. It marks and creases readily and the wax transfers onto a light surface in heat — that patina is the material behaving normally, not wearing out. Re-wax every couple of years.
- Made
- Cut, stitched and riveted in Pennsylvania from canvas woven and waxed in North Carolina. Leather ties from a Wisconsin tannery.
Care
- Brush off dirt dry. Do not machine wash — it strips the wax completely.
- Re-wax with a proprietary canvas wax every two years or when water stops beading.
- Store the tools dry. A wet chisel in a closed roll rusts faster than one left on the bench.
Cautions
- Not waterproof. Waxed canvas is water-resistant and sheds a shower; it will wet through in sustained rain.
- Not for storing tools long-term without oiling them. The roll traps humidity as readily as it keeps it out.
- Not to be left in a hot vehicle. The wax migrates, and it will transfer onto whatever the roll is resting against.
