Forty quarter-sheets of aluminium-oxide paper on a flexible latex backing, ten each of 80, 120, 180 and 240. The four grits that between them cover almost all bench sanding, in the quantity that gets used rather than the single sheet that gets hoarded.
The backing is latex rather than plain paper, so a sheet folds around a block without cracking through the grit at the fold. It costs a little more per sheet and it roughly doubles how long each one lasts.
What is specified instead
This item carries no load rating. These are the properties that govern it instead — stated plainly, including the fact that there is no load figure.
Load ratingNot applicable — no load rating.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 80 grit | Stock removal | Milling marks, rough levelling, paint removal. Leaves scratches that 120 must clear. |
| 120 grit | Levelling | Clears 80-grit scratches. The grit most work should start at. |
| 180 grit | Pre-finish | The right stopping point under most oil and wax finishes. |
| 240 grit | Between coats | De-nibbing between finish coats. Sanding bare timber this fine closes the grain and resists stain. |
How these were arrived at
This item carries no working load rating — the table above states what each grit is for instead, which is the specification that actually governs whether it is the right product.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Composition
- Graded aluminium-oxide grain, resin-bonded to a flexible latex-impregnated paper backing, open-coat.
- Dimensions
- 230 × 140 mm quarter sheets. Fits a standard third-sheet sander with one fold.
- Weight
- 340 g the pack.
- Finish & variation
- Open-coat grain, which loads more slowly than closed-coat on resinous timber. Colour differs slightly between grit batches; it carries no meaning.
- Made
- Coated and graded in Ontario, Canada. Cut, counted and packed here in Pennsylvania.
Care
- Store flat and dry. Damp paper sheds its grit.
- Do not skip more than one grit — 80 straight to 180 leaves scratches the finish will show.
- Tap a loaded sheet out rather than working it past its life.
Cautions
- Not wet-and-dry. This is a dry-use abrasive; water destroys the bond and the backing.
- Not for metal polishing. Aluminium oxide on a latex backing loads immediately on soft metal.
- Not for use on a belt or a disc sander — these are hand and orbital sheets and they will tear.
