A sprung metal toggle for plasterboard, lath and hollow block — anywhere there is a cavity behind the surface and nothing solid to expand against. The wings fold to pass through the hole and spring open on the far side, spreading the load across a wide footprint of board rather than a single point.

The load figures depend almost entirely on the board, not the toggle. A single sheet of 12.5 mm plasterboard is a weak material and it is the thing that fails; doubling the board more than doubles what the fixing holds. That is why the table lists board thicknesses rather than a headline number.

Working load limits

What this item holds, in the material you are fixing into. Every figure is a working load — the safety factor is already taken out.

Safety factor4:1 — every figure below is the tested mean divided by four.

Working load limits for Hollin Cavity Toggle 5 mm by substrate
Substrate / conditionWorking loadNotes
Single 12.5 mm plasterboard on studs72 lbTension, pull straight out from the wall. Board failure governs, not the toggle.
Double 12.5 mm plasterboard155 lbTension. Doubling the board more than doubles the figure.
12.5 mm plasterboard, load hanging down the wall110 lbShear. A shelf bracket loads the fixing this way and it is the stronger direction.
Hollow clay block, 25 mm face shell190 lbTension. The wing must open fully inside the void — check it is not landing in a web.

How these were arrived at

Pull-tested on framed board samples, ten per configuration, at 68°F and 50% relative humidity. Damp plasterboard loses roughly a third of these figures, so nothing here applies in a bathroom that is not ventilated.

The specification

Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.

Composition
Zinc-plated steel machine screw with a sprung steel toggle wing and a spring-steel torsion bar.
Dimensions
5 mm (M5) screw × 55 mm. Toggle folds to 13 mm, opens to 52 mm span. Requires a 14 mm hole.
Weight
16 g each; 490 g per box of 30.
Finish & variation
Bright zinc electroplate, clear passivated. Interior only, which for a cavity fixing is not a limitation.
Made
Cold-formed, hardened and finished at a fastener works in the Ruhr, Germany. Boxed and counted here in Pennsylvania.

Care

  • Hold tension on the screw as you tighten, or the toggle spins instead of seating.
  • Mark the hole and check for a stud or a pipe before you drill a 14 mm hole in a wall.
  • Keep the spare toggles boxed — a loose toggle in a drawer will have lost its spring by the time you want it.

Cautions

  • Not recoverable. Undo the screw and the toggle falls into the cavity — it is gone, and if you need to remount you will need a fresh one and often a fresh hole.
  • Not for solid walls. In solid masonry there is no cavity for the wing to open into, and it will jam in the hole.
  • Not for anything heavy on a single fixing. Wall-hung cabinets, televisions and grab rails belong on the studs, and a toggle is what you use for the fixings between them, not instead of them.
