A hybrid-polymer gap-filling adhesive for bonding sheet goods, trim, treads and battens to timber, masonry and most rigid boards. Solvent-free, so it will not attack polystyrene insulation the way a solvent-based grab adhesive does.

It builds initial grab in about ten minutes and reaches full strength over three days. The strength figures below are the full-cure numbers; the initial grab is enough to hold a batten to a wall while you fix it mechanically, and it is not enough to hold anything on its own overnight.

Working load limits

What this item holds, in the material you are fixing into. Every figure is a working load — the safety factor is already taken out.

Safety factor4:1 — every figure below is the tested mean divided by four.

Working load limits for Marl Construction Adhesive 290 ml by substrate
Substrate / conditionWorking loadNotes
Timber to timber, 6 mm bead, full 72-hour cure62 lb per linear footShear along the bond line, both surfaces clean and dry.
Timber to smooth concrete, 6 mm bead, full cure45 lb per linear footShear. Dusty or friable concrete gives a fraction of this — brush it first.
Plywood to painted plasterboard, 6 mm bead18 lb per linear footShear. The paint film is what fails, not the adhesive.

How these were arrived at

Lap-shear tested on 50 mm wide bonded samples after 72 hours at 68°F and 50% relative humidity, ten per substrate, then converted to a per-foot figure. Below 50°F cure slows sharply and the figures do not apply until it has warmed up and finished curing.

The specification

Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.

Composition
Silane-modified polymer, solvent-free and isocyanate-free. Off-white, non-slump paste.
Dimensions
290 ml cartridge, standard skeleton-gun profile. A 6 mm bead runs roughly 33 feet.
Weight
425 g filled.
Finish & variation
Cures to a flexible off-white rubber. It is paintable with water-based paint after full cure and will not accept most solvent-based paints.
Made
Formulated and filled in Ohio. Every cartridge is date-stamped on the crimp with the batch and the month of manufacture.

Care

  • Store upright between 40 and 80°F, out of direct sun.
  • Cut the nozzle to the bead you actually want; you cannot make it smaller afterwards.
  • Wipe the nozzle and cap it — a cured plug wastes more product than the job used.

Cautions

  • Not a substitute for mechanical fixing on anything structural or anything overhead. It is an adhesive, and adhesives fail in peel.
  • Not for use below 40°F. It will not cure, and a bead applied cold does not recover when the weather warms.
  • Not for continuously submerged joints or for polyethylene, polypropylene, PTFE or bituminous surfaces — nothing bonds to those.
  • Not paintable with solvent-based paint. The solvent softens the cured bead and the paint film cracks.
