A neutral-cure silicone for perimeter sealing around glass, metal frames, stone and mirrors. Neutral-cure rather than acetoxy: it does not release acetic acid as it cures, so it will not corrode metal frames or etch natural stone, and it does not smell of vinegar in a closed room.

It is a movement joint sealant, not an adhesive. It is rated for continuous movement of about a quarter of the joint width, which is what a properly sized joint needs and what a thin smear over a crack cannot deliver.

Working load limits

What this item holds, in the material you are fixing into. Every figure is a working load — the safety factor is already taken out.

Safety factor4:1 — every figure below is the tested mean divided by four.

Working load limits for Marl Neutral-Cure Sealant 300 ml by substrate
Substrate / conditionWorking loadNotes
Movement capability, correctly sized joint±25% of joint widthThe joint must be at least twice as wide as it is deep for this to hold.
Glass to anodised aluminium, 6 mm joint22 lb per linear footTension across the joint after full cure. A weatherseal figure, not a structural one.
Service temperature range, cured-40°F to 300°FContinuous. Cure below 40°F is impractically slow.

How these were arrived at

Movement capability from a standard cyclic joint test; the adhesion figure was measured on 50 mm bonded samples after 14 days at 68°F. Skin time is 12 minutes and full cure is roughly 2 mm of depth per day, so a deep joint takes considerably longer than a shallow one.

The specification

Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.

Composition
Neutral alkoxy-cure silicone with fungicide. Translucent. Also available in white and grey on request.
Dimensions
300 ml cartridge. A 6 mm joint runs roughly 27 feet; a 10 mm joint roughly 10 feet.
Weight
440 g filled.
Finish & variation
Cures to a flexible translucent rubber. It is not paintable — no paint adheres to cured silicone, and this is the property that makes people choose the wrong sealant for a joint they intend to paint.
Made
Formulated and filled in Ohio. Every cartridge is date-stamped on the crimp with the batch and the month of manufacture.

Care

  • Store upright between 40 and 80°F, out of direct sun.
  • Cut the nozzle to the bead you actually want; you cannot make it smaller afterwards.
  • Wipe the nozzle and cap it — a cured plug wastes more product than the job used.
  • Tool the joint within 12 minutes, before the skin forms.

Cautions

  • Not paintable, ever. Nothing adheres to cured silicone. If the joint needs paint, it needs an acrylic sealant instead.
  • Not a structural adhesive and not a gap filler. A movement joint has to be designed and sized; silicone smeared into a crack will split again at the first cycle.
  • Not for use on a surface that will later be sealed with something else. Silicone residue contaminates the substrate permanently and nothing will bond to it afterwards.
  • Not for continuously submerged joints or for bituminous surfaces.
