A bevel-edge bench chisel in through-hardened carbon steel, ground to 25° and honed on the flat and the bevel before it is boxed. It arrives sharp — not factory-sharp, actually sharp — because a chisel that needs an hour of work before its first cut is a chisel that gets used blunt.

The handle is ash with a steel hooped ferrule at the shoulder and a struck end hooped as well, so it takes a mallet without splitting. Carbon steel rather than stainless: it will spot if it is put away wet, and it holds an edge through work that takes stainless straight back to the stone.

How these were arrived at

This item carries no working load rating. A chisel is an edge tool and nothing about it is structural — the specification that matters is the edge geometry and the hardness, both of which are stated above.

The specification

Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.

Composition
Through-hardened and tempered high-carbon steel blade at 60–62 HRC, ash handle, two steel hoops.
Dimensions
25 mm blade width, 105 mm blade length, 4 mm at the shoulder. 285 mm overall.
Weight
312 g
Finish & variation
Blade left unplated, lightly oiled for transit. It will develop a grey patina with use and will spot orange if it is stored wet — both are normal for the steel and neither affects the edge.
Made
Forged, hardened and tempered in Sheffield, England, then ground, honed and handled here in Pennsylvania. Working faces left unplated.

Care

  • Wipe dry immediately after use. Do not leave it wet on the bench.
  • A light oil once a month if the shop is unheated or humid.
  • Take spots off with fine wool and re-oil; do not use an abrasive pad.
  • Hone on the bevel before the edge stops cutting, not after. Ten strokes often beats a full regrind later.
  • Store in a roll or a rack, never loose in a drawer with other steel.

Cautions

  • Not stainless. Unplated carbon steel will spot with rust if it is put away wet — that is the trade for an edge that keeps.
  • Not for a machine wash of any kind. The heat and detergent strip the finish and loosen the handle in the wood.
  • Not for striking with a steel hammer unless the tool has a struck face designed for it. A hardened edge chips rather than deforms.
  • Not a lever or a screwdriver. Levering with a chisel snaps the blade at the shoulder, and it snaps toward you.
  • Not for use on anything that might contain a nail. One nail takes out an edge that took twenty minutes to put on.
