A forged flat bar with a bevelled chisel end and a hooked nail-pulling end, in the length that fits a tool bag and still gives real leverage. Both ends are ground thin enough to get under a board without splitting it and thick enough not to curl on the first pull.
This is the tool people reach for instead of a chisel or a screwdriver, and it is the right one — it is heat-treated for the job, which is to say it is tempered softer than an edge tool so it bends before it shatters.
Working load limits
What this item holds, in the material you are fixing into. Every figure is a working load — the safety factor is already taken out.
Safety factor4:1 — every figure below is the tested mean divided by four.
| Substrate / condition | Working load | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Prying at the chisel end, load at the extreme tip | 440 lb | Beyond this the tip takes a permanent set and will not sit flat again. |
| Nail pulling at the hook, 5 mm shank | 620 lb | Withdrawal force through the hook. Use a block under the bar to protect the surface. |
How these were arrived at
Measured on a bench rig with the bar fixed and load applied at the working end, ten samples, at 68°F. Both figures are the point at which the bar takes a permanent set, divided by four — a bar that has visibly bent has been past its rating and should be replaced rather than straightened.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Composition
- Drop-forged high-carbon steel, hardened and tempered to 48–52 HRC — deliberately softer than an edge tool so it takes a set rather than snapping.
- Dimensions
- 380 mm overall, 25 mm wide, 8 mm thick at the spine. Chisel end ground to 15°; nail slot takes up to a 5 mm shank.
- Weight
- 580 g
- Finish & variation
- Black oxide over the forged surface, ground bright at both working ends. The bright ends will rust if stored damp; the oxide on the body will not.
- Made
- Forged, hardened and tempered in Sheffield, England, then ground, honed and handled here in Pennsylvania. Working faces left unplated.
Care
- Wipe the bright ends dry and oil them lightly.
- Do not grind a bent bar back to shape — the temper is gone where it bent.
- Keep the chisel end square; a rounded end slips out under load.
Cautions
- Not a chisel. It is tempered soft and it will not hold a cutting edge.
- Not for use as a lever with a pipe extension. The rating assumes hand force at the length supplied.
- Not for striking with a steel hammer on the body. Strike the end only, and only with a dead-blow or a soft-face if you value the finish.
