Rowan Marking Knife
Spear-point, hardened carbon, ash handle

A spear-point marking knife, ground on both faces so it cuts a clean line pulled in either direction and registers flat against a square from either side. A pencil line has width and a knife line does not, which is the entire argument for owning one.
The point is fine and it is meant to be. It will break if the knife is used to pry, to open a box, or to cut anything that is not a shallow line in timber.

This item carries no working load rating. It is a marking tool; nothing about it is structural and no figure would mean anything.
The specification
Everything we know about this item, stated plainly. The same record is printed on the card in the box.
- Composition
- Through-hardened high-carbon steel blade at 60–62 HRC, ash handle with a brass ferrule.
- Dimensions
- 20 mm blade width, 52 mm blade length. 178 mm overall. Blade 2.5 mm thick.
- Weight
- 78 g
- Finish & variation
- Blade unplated and lightly oiled. Brass ferrule left unlacquered and will dull to a warm brown, which is the brass behaving normally.
- Made
- Forged, hardened and tempered in Sheffield, England, then ground, honed and handled here in Pennsylvania. Working faces left unplated.
Care
- Wipe dry immediately after use. Do not leave it wet on the bench.
- A light oil once a month if the shop is unheated or humid.
- Take spots off with fine wool and re-oil; do not use an abrasive pad.
- Hone both faces equally or the knife stops tracking straight along a straightedge.
Cautions
- Not stainless. Unplated carbon steel will spot with rust if it is put away wet — that is the trade for an edge that keeps.
- Not for a machine wash of any kind. The heat and detergent strip the finish and loosen the handle in the wood.
- Not for striking with a steel hammer unless the tool has a struck face designed for it. A hardened edge chips rather than deforms.
- Not a utility knife. The point is ground fine for marking and it will snap on cardboard, cord or packaging.
- Not for deep cuts. Score lightly and repeat; one heavy pass wanders with the grain and ruins the line you were trying to make precise.
